Thabang Mojapelo

Dancer

I began my dance journey in 2004 at the Dance Factory based in Newtown Johannesburg. Here I was taught in Afro-fusion, Contemporary and Ballet techniques. In 2010 I performed for the first time at Dance Umbrella in Dada Masilo's Swan Lake.

In 2013 I commenced my studies at The National School of The Arts, Braamfontain Johannesburg, where I continued my technical training in Ballet, Contemporary and Spanish Flamenco dance styles. In 2015 - 2017 I performed at the Grahamstown National Arts Festival, through The National School of the Arts. During my high school period I participated in Musical Theatre productions namely Fame and Once on This Island. I began to venture in to choreography, music management, technical directing skills, event planning and event coordinating. Implementing these growing skills in several NSA productions.

In 2018 I joined Vuyani Dance Theatre as a trainee. I performed in Gregory Maqoma’s Mayhem at Dance Umbrella. Later that year I performed a Duet Snap with Musa Motha choreographed by Gladys Agulhas at Adrienne Sichel's Body Politics: Dance Book launch. The duet was also performed at the Naledi Awards in 2019. I had had my first choreographic experience with the company with my solo Tug of War performed at the annual Vuyani Week, here I also performed in Roseline Wilkens' Cry the Beloved Eldos which was also performed at the inaugural Dance Umbrella Africa and the My Body My Space Festival in 2019. I also performed in Otto Nhlapo's Gister Maobane which was another work we performed at the Vuyani Week and Dance Umbrella Africa.

I graduated to an apprentice within the company and began traveling internationally with Gregory Maqoma’s Rise at the Fall for Dance in New York, as well as Cion: Requiem of Ravel’s Bolero which has been the primary work based on my travels. I performed in Czech Republic, Marseille, Amsterdam, London, New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Washington DC.

I am currently a Junior Dancer at Vuyani Dance Theatre and my interests in Event Marketing led me to take up Sports Marketing at the Boston City Campus and Business Collage where I am currently completing my third year.
