Xolisile Bongwana’s dance career started in 1999. In 2005 he joined Uphondo Lwe Afrika in Port Elizabeth before spending several years with the Dodgy Clutch Company, touring the UK and the USA and working with choreographer Robyn Orlin. He has performed in the ANC Centenary Celebration and to the opening of the Nelson Mandela Childrens Hospital. Has worked extensively with Gregory Maqoma and Luyanda Sidiya. He has worked with James Ngcobo in his collaboration with Luyanda Sidiya on a production called Ketekang and has performed in various festivals with Vuyani Dance Theatre such as; National Arts Festival, Jomba, Baxter Festival, Kuopio Dance Festival, HAIFA Festival , Afro Vibes Festival, Fall for Dance Festival in New York, Metro FM Awards, National Teacher’s Awards and Naledi Awards. 2016 was Nominated for Mail and Guardian 200 Young South African, Xolisile has also toured other international countries such as the Netherlands, Spain, Canada, France, Zimbabwe and Switzerland.
Bongwana has also performed theatrical works like Umnikelo, Dominion, Fullmoon, Skeleton Dry, Beautiful US and Mayhem, Greg and Friends and Joys of Sharing. Together with his talent for dance Xolisile is also an exceptional vocalist and as a result he has toured with Gregory Maqoma in Exit/Exist as a singer. Xolisile is also the composer and musical director of Siva, a dance work choreographed by Luyanda Sidiya, The Standard Bank Young Artist for 2015. Siva was performed at the Grahamstown Festival and also in China. Xolisile also composed music for Makwande, a Solo by Luyanda Sidiya. Together with being a senior Dancer, Xolisile was recently promoted to being the Production Assistant of Vuyani Dance Company, he keeps pushing boundaries and exploring other skills.
