Who We Are

Our productions draw deeply from, African heritage while embracing global contemporary forms.

Vuyani Dance Theatre (VDT) is a world‑class contemporary African dance company based in Johannesburg’s vibrant Newtown Cultural Precinct. As a cornerstone of South African contemporary dance, VDT is celebrated for its technical mastery, creative excellence, and emotionally charged storytelling that continues to captivate audiences worldwide.

Founded in 1999 by visionary choreographer and artistic director Gregory Maqoma, the company embodies the pulse of modern African identity, merging classical and contemporary forms with indigenous rhythms, rituals, and narratives. Over the years, VDT has presented a dynamic repertoire of groundbreaking productions across Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Americas.

Beyond performance, VDT is a hub for innovation, education, and cultural dialogue. It sustains permanent staff while creating jobs through collaborations with dancers, musicians, poets, and designers. Income generated is reinvested into its outreach programme, which engages and inspires over 200 learners annually, ensuring that artistic success translates into education, opportunity, and lasting social impact.

Our Story

A rhythm that seeks to tell African stories through movement.

Founded by Gregory Maqoma in 1999 while he was training abroad, Vuyani Dance Theatre grew from an idea of blending rigorous contemporary technique with African narratives and local performance traditions. Over more than two decades the company has established itself as one of South Africa’s most influential contemporary dance organisations, presenting work at major local venues and on international stages. In 2024–2025 VDT celebrated its 25th anniversary with performances and public outreach that reaffirmed its long-standing cultural impact

Our Mission

Build sustainable cultural practice...

We create bold, original dance-theatre that reflects African experiences and imaginations, while nurturing the next generation of dancers, choreographers and arts leaders. Through performance, education and community engagement, VDT aims to expand contemporary dance’s reach, deepen public conversation and build sustainable cultural practice across South Africa and beyond.

Artistic Approach

Build sustainable cultural practice...

Our work examines identity, memory and social life through a vocabulary that fuses contemporary technique, theatrical composition and distinctly African movement sensibilities. Productions are developed collaboratively—often integrating live music, text and visual design to create layered, immersive experiences that invite conversation and reflection.
